History of Stoney Girl Gardens from My Perspective

History of Stoney Girl Gardens from My Perspective

From the inception of the MMJ laws I have perceived being involved with the process from a private business perspective.  My initial thought was compliance since this was my then current specialty.  My ideas were squashed by the regulation of numbers on plants in any one location and federal intervention.

I then met a patient that I later would learn would be my soul mate.  This changed my life forever.  I began growing for her and we also began a breeding program. The story began when I was sitting in a Gentleman’s club one rainy day.  I often went to those kinds of places to get a rest from the daily phones and corporate drag. This was my place of rest.

This day, while having a cold one, I overheard a very beautiful exotic dancer asking people if they would grow pot for her. After realizing that she was asking total strangers, and wondering if she had a death wish to be killed by a stranger, I looked over and said, “ I might be able to help”.  You see, my biggest vice was recreational marijuana.  I have had years of commercial, hands on experience.  I knew people and things.  I had friends all over the world.  I had experience working side by side with some of the world’s best, in some of the most unusual, historic circumstances.  Life had led me this path. This was my chance to get back to hands on growing.

I offered her some old equipment I had hanging out in my storage. That is until I viewed her lack of environment. I walked in to view a small spot in a closet with a shelf light and two sickly, fully matured plants. She really needed help! Needless to say, I built a grow and shared much knowledge and fun together. You might say we built our own Garden of Eden where our garden grows love.

I soon learned that working within the requirements of the medical marijuana program and commercial cultivation was much different.  It was neither as fun nor profitable. In fact, it cost a lot of money for just a little product. There were a lot of obstacles to overcome. Numbers were the big one. How do you grow, or make anything with only 6 plants?  Where do you even get started with a small budget? Where does the small guy get supplies and starts? And were supposed to do all this without income or profit?   This reason alone is the one that dispels the real commercial scientists.

Introducing Stoney Girl Gardens

We first started Stoney Girl Gardens in 2000 for the purpose of promoting a successful and easy way to grow for Oregon Medical Marijuana Program card holders.   We also wanted to display our exclusive genetic work. All of this was kept specific to the Oregon program. We soon won awards for our work, and became acknowledged for our genetics. We have been published in HT and many other papers. We have formed allies with national folks such as Ed Rosenthal, Tommy Chong, Eddie Lepp, Elvie Musikka, Stevie Nix, Doobies and more. We are active and well known in every major group and organization in Oregon.  We are a political force in Salem.

Many organizations were at first perplexed by our marketing which included handouts, pictures, copies of our mix, Cutting and Seed Guides, and other helpful info, all for free.  Our consistent course along with our political activism and genuine support has allowed us to become entrusted members of most organizations.  Our reputation is secure by our past and current work.

We give away many cuttings to all organizations.  We are happy to pass out our exclusive genetics. As stated above, once they are circulated, they go far and help a lot of sick people. It is something that is permanent, unstoppable and non retractable. Why we breed is another story. We have often been asked what our standing is on noted companies stealing our genetics.  Our answerer is that there is no better way to get our work out than to have someone credible use it, and pass it on. Our goal has always been to better the quality of medicine around the world. We have seen the industry improve and believe we have been a necessary part of that evolutionary change.

Our current standing allows us to be in the position of having more flexibility within these organizations.  As such we began talking about having products on March of 2008.This is something we never did before. We have always given things away and prided ourselves on never selling anything.  Stoney Girl Gardens is not an org, corporation, membership, club, company or anything else, yet. We are well respected, well known, and treated like super-stars at any gathering or event.  We are merely successful program participants, and want everyone to be the same.

The Effect of Medical Marijuana on the Black Market

The Effect of Medical Marijuana on the Black Market

We are fortunate in Oregon to begin exploring the effects of a standardized program for Medical Marijuana.  There is a huge community of diverse patients whom many are activists.  Our Activist per capita rate is the highest in the nation.  The growth of the program has exceeded expectations and is continuing this course. Continue reading The Effect of Medical Marijuana on the Black Market

The Underground

The Underground

The cannabis culture has long been rooted in the underground or black market as we will refer to it.  It has long been taboo to discuss sources, connections, people and advice. These were closely guarded secrets, though far reaching. Continue reading The Underground

Class Division

Back to Class(es)

Its’ time to recognize that we have become so complacent and comfortable with our current marijuana laws to the point of creating separate classes; the leagalizer and the patient. A bit of history and an opinion on our state:

First, we need a brief history on the activism here in Oregon. All activism came from leagalizers.  Before OMMA, the patient was considered a leaglaizer.  Under Federal Rules there is no difference between patients and leagalizers. The Cannabis Buyers Club, although staffed with “patients” was totally ran and underwritten by leagalizers. We owe much to these people for our medical program.  As it stands therefore we are still all legalizers until we can change the Federal laws.

There are many patients enjoying the comfort level of the current program.  However it is those who work outside this comfort zone that forge the way.  They firmly believe in patients “rights” however are not a patient now and hope to never have to be.  This does not mean that they have not worked hard for the efforts, will do all they can to enhance and support the program. But we cannot forget the real fight, total freedom.  As it stands now, we are constantly in the line of fire and there is no guarantee that your patient rights in Oregon are protected federally. We could loose them at any time. This is why the fight MUST continue, including that of the leagalizer. This makes it even more important to the patient. After 10 years of program we are just beginning to gain credible ground in educating our medical providers. They did not create the program.

There are many patients who never used marijuana before the program. It is hard for them to understand that it was in fact the recreational users who forged the path of success for medical marijuana. Many of these early pioneers were very adept in the “black market”. All of these pioneers were professionals at taking great risks. The current medical program was made available to you largely through these individuals. We are all one.

Stop The Class Division- It Is Up To You!

These class divisions leave us prey for divide and conquer tactics. To date this has been the biggest trouble maker we face.

Quite frankly, it is in the leagalizers plan to use medical marijuana as a launching pad to total freedom (Federal Re-Scheduling).  If mj is re-scheduled then all of our major battles would be over…finished. We would not be here discussing these issues. Even as a patient you can agree with this.

We met with Kieth Stroup (NORML Founder) last year at the 2007 Oregon Cannabis Awards hosted by ORNORML. During the discussion one of our key points was that there in fact had been a division of classes amongst marijuana users here in Oregon.  We also had great concerns about the problems this class division was causing (including amongst orgs).

We felt that some were assisting in creating this division with the exclusion of “leagalizers” and focusing only on MMJ (it is good to see the direction changed somewhat).  We felt that NORML needed an outlet for leagalizers. We feel the patients are well organized and know their own needs better, and that NORML needs to have primary focus on national reform for everyone. The point is folks we all have only one fight.  We won’t win if we are divided. We must not be afraid to work outside of our comfort zone to move forward.  We did not win yet, contrary to popular belief (and current comfort level).

Let’s be careful not to support a class division.

The medical use of marijuana is and always has been part of the strategy for full legalization by all major organizations.  This will not change. Patients cannot forget that there is no sanctity yet until the war is won. Simply winning one small battle on the front does not guaranty victory of the war. NORML cannot forget that it has a goal first for National Reform, not medical reform. Medical reform cannot happen without National Reform.  We are team mates regardless of our current position and we have not won yet.

Keep up the fight, I know I will. But let’s not create classes of citizens in our own community. It is up to each of us to take a look at the whole and support each other.

Thanks,

The Grower
